The no net loss principle has the objective to avoid net losses and to generate a net gain for biodiversity. This principle is generally associated to environmental offsetting schemes, often being part of the concept itself or as its purpose. The no net loss is oriented by prevention, through the identification and selection of priority areas, and compensation, through the mitigation hierarchy procedure and through the adoption of an appropriate methodology to gauge and replicate ecosystems functions and biodiversity. The present work intends to demonstrate that its application is relevant in environmental preservation due to the technical impossibility of replacing certain ecosystems and values of biodiversity.
